Has anyone sold their fixer-upper? ›

Chip and Joanna Gaines have sold their lake house—but you can still watch their renovation unfold on “Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse.” A Magnolia Network rep has confirmed, “They bought the Lakehouse with the intention of flipping it, and they have sold it.”

Depending on the size of the renovation, a fixer-upper can take anywhere from a month to more than a year to complete.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle, the "Fixer Upper" stars were sued over taxes owed on their regally renovated castle, Cottonland Castle, a historic home in the town the Gaineses have helped to revive.

As of today, nearly a year later, Chip and Joanna Gaines still own the castle. While the Gaines family owns the property, it remains vacant, so they offer guided tours to fans. Fans can buy tickets to tour the castle, complete with all the design elements and furnishing featured in the show.

There are even TV shows about them. Why are they falling out of favor with buyers now? Veronica Dagher: Well, one of the reasons is they just don't want to hire a contractor. It's a lot of work to do that, and it's hard to find them these days, but the big factor here is high mortgage rates.

Don't disregard foundational or layout issues.

Any major cracks or shifts in the foundation can turn any low-risk investment into a high-risk one. A fixer-upper with a bad layout can also be the cause for complete reconstruction and major financing. A good layout should be practical and allow space to flow.

Homeowners on the show must have a home with a purchase price under $200,000 and they require at least $30,000 worth of renovations. HGTV does not fund the renovations, but they do cover the cost of one bonus item and pay a talent fee to Chip & Joanna.

A fixer-upper may be a good investment, but it can also be a huge money pit if you estimate renovations incorrectly, contract out for most projects and skip an inspection. To ensure a fixer-upper house is well worth the money, look at comparable homes (known as real estate comps) in the neighborhood.

There are several factors that have allowed these old homes to last for centuries; superior raw materials, unimpeded energy flow, and air flow. The materials these homes were built with had a higher potential to store water without failing, and could dry out easily due to the lack of insulation and air flow.

Furniture Is Not Included

According to The Kitchn, Joanna shared on her Magnolia blog that the furniture and decor are there to help new homeowners visualize their space. If they like it, they can buy it, but those finishing touches aren't included in the renovation budget.

Does HGTV pay for renovations on 'Fixer Upper'? Surprisingly, the answer is no. The couple (or person) is responsible for paying for their own renovations, but that doesn't mean they walk away totally empty handed. While HGTV doesn't fund the renovations, they do pay for one big ticket item.

First, Joanna sometimes gifted the homeowners a piece or two from the staging. This was usually a refurbished item or a personal touch that spoke to the clients, but it wasn't guaranteed. Second, no one walked away totally empty handed.

The couple eventually announced in September 2017 that they were concluding the show after its fifth season the following April, sharing that they needed time to focus on their family. "[The children are] so young, and we want to give them the chance to have a normal childhood," said Joanna, 39, at the time.
