  • What is Openreach?

Openreach is the company that maintains the former British Telecom Network used for the majority of broadband and phone services. If a repair or installation is required, it’s Openreach who will send an engineer, not your provider.

More than 650 service providers using the Openreach network. That’s the majority of the UK’s broadband providers. This includes Sky, TalkTalk and BT. The exception to this is Virgin Media - it uses its own, separate cable network.

How do I get TalkTalk Fibre?

TalkTalk fibre contracts are 18 months long. The packages have free, unlimited weekday and weekend calls as an optional extra. There's also an option to add on international calls.

There aren't anyupfront costs with TalkTalk. It also offers a 30-day 'Great Connection Guarantee', so new customers are free to leave if they're not happy with their new connection.

Already subscribed to another internet service provider? If you're still in the original contract period, you'll likely have to pay an exit fee to switch to TalkTalk. Make sure you know how to switch your broadband package before you start the cancelling process.

What fibre broadband packages does TalkTalk offer?

TalkTalk offers a few fibre broadband packagesto choose from. All of these includea free Wi-Fi router. We have more information on this in our TalkTalk router round-up.

  • What's ADSL?

ADSL stands for ‘Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line’. It’s broadband technology that allows the transfer data across regular telephone lines. You can make calls at the same time as being connected to the internet.

An ADSL line will, at minimum, allow for a broadband connection of up to 8Mb. These days, that’s pretty slow and won’t allow you to do much other than emailing or basic web searches.

ADSL2+ is now available at nearly all exchanges across the UK with slightly faster data transfer rates of around 10-11Mb.

Here are your TalkTalk fibre broadband options:

Is TalkTalk fibre internet right for me?

Which of these fibre broadband packages is right for you? Do you even need fibre internet?

Tasks such asbasic browsing, email, andshopping won't needthe high speeds of fibre broadband. If this is all you doonline, you should be fine with the cheapest option.

Similarly, if you're in one of those remote rural areas that fibre broadband hasn't yet reached, the basic option might be all you can use.

We think it's worth spending a bit more money to get a faster TalkTalk deal if:

  • You're a gamer. Fast fibre optic broadband lets you download the latest releases in far less time than ADSL broadband. Fibre is also a must if you stream on Twitch or YouTube, or host multiplayer matches. Check out our guide to gaming broadband for more information on this.
  • You love to stream video. High definition Netflix and Amazon Video streams are a lot smoother with a superfast fibre connection.
  • You have a busy shared home. The more people sharing your connection, the greater the speed you'll need. Fibre optic can cope with the demands of busy shared and family homes.

TalkTalk supplies its services using either an Openreach or CityFibre network. If you've typed your address into our deals checker, but you aren't seeing anything faster than TalkTalk Fibre 65, you may want to register on both these network checker sites.
