Summary

Excellent opportunity to start your career in facilities. The postholder is required to carry out the duties of an Apprentice Caretaker Assistant, including those particular duties which the Headteacher may reasonably assign from time to time as the needs of the school dictate.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To ensure the Health and Safety of the staff and the students at all times and be conversant with the school's Health and Safety policy
  • To report all defects or hazards to building fabrics, furniture, equipment and grounds to the Facilities Manager/Site Supervisor or the Headmaster if the Facilities Manager /Site Supervisor is absent
  • To carry out necessary minor repairs, fixing where possible or making safe until qualified personnel can be called in through the direction of the Facilities Manager. This work will include adjustments to doors, windows, locking systems, general carpentry, light fitting tubes and diffuser replacement etc.
  • To carry out all necessary cleaning to the fabric of the building during the school day including toilet areas, outside areas and litter removal. This includes making safe an area that has been contaminated by a pupil who has been unwell and disposing of any contaminated materials using relevant safety gear
  • To learn and understand all heating and hot water controls including boiler time clocks and associated services when required. In parallel you will be expected to familiarise yourself with the location of gas rooms, service runs and other hazardous services runs or supplies kept on the school site
  • To respond promptly to urgent operational requirements
  • To assist the Site supervisor on an 'as required' basis
  • Inspect pupil lavatories daily and at regular intervals during term time and see that appropriate cleaning is performed throughout the day. Re stocking of toilet rolls and hand towels
  • Maintain the grounds, cutting grass and pruning bushes where necessary
  • Ensure that the school buildings and playgrounds are kept free of litter and that the bins are emptied regularly
  • In bad weather, clearing playgrounds, pathways, car parks and internal roads using rock salt and whatever methods necessary Maintain safe routes inside the building and out during the school day
  • After any drill, reset the fire alarm system, if activated
  • To remain aware and observant, ensuring that all fire exits and escape routes remain free from obstruction both internally and externally at all times
  • To be familiar with the use of fire-fighting equipment and procedures
  • To act as a Fire Marshall in emergency situations for which training will be given
  • Monitor deliveries and consumable stock items and ensure they are securely, and correctly stored until delivery to the relevant department and the paperwork is signed and handed to the Finance Officer
  • Portering of equipment, materials and furniture throughout the premises
  • Maintaining the minibuses to a certain standard, including checking petrol, oil and water, making sure they are kept clean and tidy
  • Transporting monies to and from the bank and post to the post office as required
  • Ensuring all cleaning cupboards, storage areas and voids are kept clean and tidy at all times and do not pose a fire risk
  • As directed by the Facilities Manager, you are to assist at Parents Evenings and at other times when the school is open to visitors; such duties may include car parking and/or supervising car parking
  • Ensure that, prior to lettings, the premises and grounds are in a satisfactory state and that furniture and equipment required are in place
  • Conduct security patrols during the period of the letting; ensure the premises are secure upon vacation by the user

  • Identify and select the appropriate materials and components for property maintenance tasks, ensuring these are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Comply with risk assessments, and organise the workplace, to safeguard themselves and the property.
  • Comply with key regulatory and legislative requirements, including building regulations.
  • Uses safe working practices when carrying out property maintenance tasks including the use of PPE, signage, barriers, access equipment and ensuring work area is prepared and reinstated.
  • Select, and use work tools and equipment for property maintenance tasks, applying all safeguards, and ensuring the correct functioning of equipment.
  • Safely isolate and secure electrical or electronic supplies prior to performing property maintenance operations.
  • Apply and implement routine emergency system checks, testing and routine maintenance, identifying and reporting faults as required.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to plumbing systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components and clearing blockages.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to external drainage systems, including clearing blockages and replacing components.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to environmental and energy management systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components.
  • Use carpentry and joinery skills to perform repairs to windows, doors and glazing units, and their associated fittings.

    • Full training will be given leading to a recognised Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship Standard Qualification
    • Full on-the-job training will be delivered
    • Off-the-job training will be supported by our Training Provider- Croydon College
    • You will also complete the Functional Skills in maths and English up to and including Level 2 (if you already do not hold the equivalent)
    • All training is carried out within the workplace during working hours
    • You attend Croydon College one day a week for training
